Sarah Wiseman, an artist from New Orleans, La., will have artwork on display at Martin Hall Gallery at the University of Mobile Sept. 24-Oct. 26 for the “UMobile Visiting Artist Series.”
The public is invited to a free artist lecture Thursday, Oct. 18 at 1:30 p.m. followed by a reception at 2:30 p.m.
Wiseman’s work has been exhibited nationally including at the Art Museum of the University of Memphis, Memphis, Tenn.; Box Heart Gallery, Pittsburgh, Pa.; and Sabatini Gallery, Topeka, Kan.
“My current artwork focuses on creating complex visual spaces that reflect the way thoughts occur in our minds… Furthermore, I am attempting to create a conceptual space for the viewer to contemplate his or her own relationship to the world around them,” Wiseman says.
Phillip Counselman, associate professor of art
at the University of Mobile
, says, “She uses a combination of materials for her works such as encaustic and graphite. It is evident that Sarah is very knowledgeable and familiar with these mediums. Our students will get to hear about her art-making process, revealing how she uses these materials. The surfaces she creates are textured and smooth, which helps her communicate her ideas about the complexity of landscape. She also plans to engage the art students and talk with them about their studio work. The art department is excited to offer her works on display in Martin Hall Gallery.”
