When Exit 13 leads worship, it’s not what one would expect. This University of Mobile band plays modern worship music in the style of folk rock for the younger generation. They want to worship God with others and share His good news.
“It’s a group of guys that love Jesus,” said Josh Pike, a senior majoring in worship leadership from Birmingham, AL.
Exit 13 is named after the exit off Interstate 65 that leads to the university. They travel to high schools, churches, and camps around the southeast, leading worship services and interacting with students. They perform about 36 concerts during a school year.
According to Mark Moses, director of Exit 13, it is one of more than 20 performing ensembles in the University’s School of Worship Leadership
and Center for Performing Arts/School of Music.
“Individually, whatever we do we glorify Christ, including our speech and conduct,” said Dustin Price, a freshman majoring in communication. Price said band members take their responsibility seriously as a representative of Christ and the University of Mobile.
According to Pike, Exit 13 is influential in that it is a picture of what the Gospel proclaims.
For Drew Miller, a junior majoring in worship leadership from Senoia, GA, Exit 13 is about the friendship they have with one another. They laugh with each other and encourage one another.
“Exit 13 has helped me to get out of my comfort zone, pushing myself spiritually,” said Trevor Bennett, a junior majoring in worship leadership from Warner Robins, GA.
Ham Holberg, a freshman majoring in nursing from Grand Bay, AL, knows that he is an example to others, especially younger kids. “I know they are watching, so it helps me to grow in Christ,” Holberg said.
Other members of the group include Christian Hilley, a junior majoring in worship leadership, and Britton Johnston, a senior majoring in worship leadership and music business, both from Montgomery, AL.
Exit 13’s newest album is now available for $5. The self-titled CD includes the songs “Holy Spirit,” “Let it Shine,” Awaken Me,” and “Near the Cross.” To purchase the CD or book a performance, call the University of Mobile Center for Performing Arts at 251.442.2420.
