The University of Mobile art department will join with English honor society Sigma Tau Delta to host an on-campus Art Walk on Thursday, Nov. 14. The public event, beginning with an Artist Talk by local artist Lauren Woods, will run from 1 to 9 p.m.
Woods’ work is displayed through Dec. 11 at the Marilyn Foley Art Gallery in the May Building on the UMobile campus. The exhibit is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and admission is free.
After graduate work in New York, Lauren Woods returned to the Mobile area as an instructor of visual arts. Her exhibitions have been extensively featured in Mobile and New York.
Commenting on her current work, Woods said, “Paintings become a theatrical space to examine notions of gender, sentimentality, desire and beauty. Remaining vulnerable to interpretation, these images continually oscillate between contradictory states, such as informed innocence, playful seriousness and clandestine sincerity.”
A reception will follow Woods’ presentation.
The UMobile Art Guild and Sigma Tau Delta will continue the Art Walk until 9 p.m. The groups will display student visual art, poetry and short stories at Farmer and Garner educational buildings. UMobile students Courtney Mason, vocals, and Christian Hilley, guitar, will perform until 4:30 p.m. followed by a literary movie night in Weaver Hall auditorium at 7 p.m.
