The first concert of the University of Mobile Jazz Series brings Denver Bierman, leader of the 2005 GMA Music Awards house band Denver and the Mile High Orchestra, to the Mobile area on Sept. 25.
The UMobile Jazz Band will perform along with Bierman, who led the Mile High Orchestra to the finale of the popular televised competition “The Next Great American Band” in 2007.
The concert will be held at the Saraland Performing Arts Center in Saraland High School at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased in advance online at iTickets.com or by calling the University of Mobile Center for Performing Arts at 251.442.2383. Tickets are also available at the door.
Denver and the Mile High Orchestra are known for musical arrangements with smooth vocals and soulful tunes that Bierman describes as “a contemporary pop sensibility with a nod to the great horn bands of the past.”
The UMobile Jazz Band is a 24-member band under the leadership of Kenn Hughes, director of instrumental studies.
“The University of Mobile Jazz Band is very excited to have the opportunity to work with Denver Bierman,” said Hughes. “Denver’s vocals and trumpet playing is powerfully unique and not to be missed.”
The UMobile Jazz Band recently recorded its debut album on the university’s 8Eighty Records label, available online at 8eightyrecords.com.
Denver and the Mile High Orchestra have come a long way from humble beginnings in Tennessee.
“The first show we performed was for 28 people,” said Bierman. “It wasn’t the hottest ticket in Nashville that night, but there was free coffee and cheesecake. That’s the one thing in the beginning I told my guys; I may not be able to pay you, but there will be dessert.”
That small group in Nashville has grown into a successful band known for their upbeat style and encouraging message, traveling the world with performances that included the summer and winter Olympic Games. For more information, visit the band’s website at www.denvermho.com.
The Saraland Performing Arts Center is located at Saraland High School, 1115 Industrial Pkwy, Saraland, Alabama 36571. The concert is part of the University of Mobile Performing Arts Series and is presented by the Christian university’s Center for Performing Arts/School of Music and School of Worship Leadership.
