Students Show Compassion Through ‘Cardboard City’ kdean posted on February 22, 2011 10:04 University of Mobile students bundled up and spent a night on the university’s intramural field in temporary homes built of cardboard to raise awareness for homelessness in the community through “Cardboard City” Feb. 11. Participants brought their cardboard boxes and braved the cold weather to experience what homeless people face every day. Students spent the next morning serving breakfast to the homeless through local shelters. Sophomore intercultural studies and English major Malory Green said the event helped students recognize the reality of homelessness in the community. “Cardboard City gave students a chance to serve (the homeless) in the name of Jesus right here in our own backyard,” Green said. “Cardboard City” was organized in conjunction with an ongoing emphasis about responding to issues of poverty, hunger and social justice from a Christian worldview.
