University of Mobile's Project Serve Impacts Community

In celebration of the University of Mobile’s 50th anniversary, the university cancelled classes for a day to engage in “Project Serve.”

On September 16, 2011, more than 1,100 UMobile faculty, staff, alumni and students began a day of service by gathering in front of Weaver Hall for a rally. Participants were welcomed by Director of Residential Life Kris Nelson; followed by words of encouragement from Assistant Professor of Accounting Kathy Dunning and an inspiring send-off from President Mark Foley.

As an expression of UMobile’s culture of learning, faith and leadership, the teams departed to community service efforts at more than 50 locations throughout Mobile and Baldwin counties. The projects were selected by each field of study in order for participants to serve with their specific expertise.

Included in the day’s projects was the School of Business serving the Dumas Wesley Community Center through landscaping, van detailing, fence repair and more. School of Education students and faculty assisted in public school classrooms while nursing students conducted blood pressure checks and taught proper hygiene practices. Center for Performing Arts members sang hymns and led choir rehearsals at more than 20 assisted living facilities in the area.

Other departments and alumni participated in projects with organizations including the Ronald McDonald House, Claire’s Hope, the Home of Grace, the Alabama Children’s Home, and more.

The university takes a practical, hands-on approach to cultivating life-change in its circle of influence, through classroom learning and community service alike. The UMobile mission of “Changing lives to change the world” isn’t about education alone – it’s about practically transforming the nation by meeting both spiritual and physical needs of people.

Through Project Serve, UMobile impacts thousands of lives by being the hands and feet of the gospel of Christ throughout the community.
