The true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection.
                      Michelangelo Buonarroti

The visual arts have a language all their own. They tell their stories in phrases of color, stanzas of form, paragraphs of texture and content. The Visual Arts Department at the University of Mobile immerses you in the language of art, teaching you to speak it fluently through the work of your hands, your eyes and your heart.
“We’re all experts at ‘looking,’ but few are experts at ‘seeing.’ We want our students to learn how to ‘see,’ to develop their creativity,” says Charles M. “Mack” Clark, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and a working artist whose porcelain pieces are in the collections of U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and several governors.
As a student in the UM Visual Arts program, you learn from and create with instructors who are also working artists. It’s this dynamic, one-on-one mentoring that nurtures your creativity and challenges you to express yourself through a variety of mediums. You may take courses in ceramics, painting, drawing and photography as you major or minor in art.
The flexibility of the UM Visual Arts program allows you to focus on the areas that most interest you. During your junior and senior years, you and your professors will design courses that let you delve deeper into the mediums you prefer. Your senior year will conclude with a senior art show displaying your works.

With a strong emphasis on design, a bachelor of arts in art from the University of Mobile prepares you for a variety of careers. “If you learn the principles of design and can develop good design skills, you can do anything in art,” says Charles M. “Mack” Clark, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “You CAN make a living in art!”
You may work as a professional artist, teach art, or pursue advance degrees in architecture or interior design. You’ll find our graduates painting lighthouses across the nation, designing brochures while serving as a missionary in Japan, painting murals on buildings, or painting portraits.

The University of Mobile is recognized throughout the region for its annual “Art With a Southern Drawl” juried art show and competition. Artists from seven southern states submit their work for consideration, and the best work is selected for the show.
As a UM art major or minor, your work will be judged alongside professional artists throughout the region. Several UM students have had their work accepted into the show – which is an honor in and of itself – and some student artwork has won top awards.
More than 5,000 people see the best work of Southern artists during April when “Art With a Southern Drawl” is displayed in Martin Hall on the UM campus.
