Secondary Certification Programs
      A Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science degree are offered in the major discipline approved for the secondary education student. The professional education component consists of knowledge and performance skills demonstrated in the areas of foundations, curriculum, media, methods and strategies, evaluation, and teaching. Knowledge of and competency in theoretical foundations will be demonstrated through directed field experiences in area middle and high schools.
      The general education component includes study in areas of humanities, social sciences, science, mathematics, and human performance and exercise science.
Note: Certificates are granted by the Alabama Department of Education, not the University of Mobile.

Areas Approved
Areas approved for secondary certification:
      • Biology
      • History
      • Mathematics
      • English Language Arts
      • Social Sciences (6-12)
      Students should refer to the major discipline sections of the
catalog for specific information about courses from each secondary area and consult content area advisers.
      Students completing undergraduate certification programs in education must complete a comprehensive exit examination during the student teaching semester.

 

Course Requirements
The following courses are required for all secondary areas regardless of the major:
      • TE 201 Foundations of Education
      • TE 301 Human Growth & Development
      • TE 304 Exceptional Child & Youth
      • TE 306 Principles & Ethics of Teaching
      • TE 405 Education & Technology

Students must be admitted into the Teacher Education
Program to take these additional required courses:
      • TE 412 Classroom Management
      • TE 417 Reading in the Content Areas
      • TE 421 Evaluation of Teaching & Learning
      • TE 423 Student Teaching & Seminar
      • TE 470 (and either 471, 472, 473, or 474)
Note: Students interested in Music Education and HPES P-12 should consult the catalog for specifics and faculty advisors in those areas.
