“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”
                                                         Psalm 111:10

These words encircle the official seal of the University of Mobile, and they are at the heart of the UM School of Christian Studies.
“In its Biblical context, the ‘fear of the Lord’ means more than just reverence and awe. It’s another way of saying ‘God’s word’ – His written word – the Bible,” says Dr. Cecil Taylor, Dean of the School of Christian Studies. “The beginning of wisdom is the word of God -- it’s the foundation of truth. For the students and faculty in the School of Christian Studies, that means we read other books to consider them. We read the Bible to believe it.”
That bold commitment to the trustworthiness of the Bible underlies a rigorous academic program that offers you seminary-level courses such as apologetics, Biblical archaeology, Hebrew or Greek. You learn from professors seasoned through years of pastoral ministry, whose concern for your intellectual development is balanced with a concern for your spiritual growth. Our faculty will challenge you to “love the Lord with all your mind” as you grow into an evangelical scholar.
Wherever God is calling you to serve, the School of Christian Studies will prepare you to serve Him with your best talents. The Theology Major aims to prepare students for ministry and equips them for further study in seminary. The Biblical Studies Major is designed to offer non-traditional aged students opportunity to improve their biblical and theological understanding for personal enrichment or for service in ministry. Our new Worship Leadership Major, offered in conjunction with Integrity Worship Institute, combines solid theological study with practical worship ministry seminars taught by internationally recognized worship leaders from Integrity such as Dove Award recipients Don Moen and Ron Kenoly, or Pete Sanchez who wrote the worship song “I Exalt Thee.”
You may build a chapel in Brazil through the University Missions program, preach in churches across the state through the Ministerial Association, learn about missions through the International Missions Fellowship, strive for excellence in the Robert Greene Lee Preaching Competition, wrestle with theological issues over sandwiches at the Dead Theologian’s Society, or organize a campus-wide Spring Forum with Alpha Theta Kappa religion honor society. Through the annual Dobbs Lecture Series, you will hear a speaker whose career is outside the traditional Christian vocations discuss how his or her faith impacts business, home and personal life. In addition to opportunities through the School of Christian Studies, you may serve as a leader for DiscipleNow, youth rallies, camps or other ministry areas through the UM Office of Spiritual Life. Your preparation for Christian service may continue with advanced study in marriage and family counseling or biblical/theological studies through our Master of Arts program.
With so many ways to practice your faith, it’s easy to make friends who will provide support and accountability for a lifetime.
