The University of Mobile’s Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences offers majors and minors in History, Political Science, Psychology, Social Science and Sociology. Teacher certifications are also available in History and Social Science.

Within these areas, you will be encouraged to apply ethical standards and a worthwhile sense of values to everyday situations in life. You will acquire career skills which will enable you to assume responsible and rewarding positions in social services, business, education, research, and many other areas.

 


An accurate understanding of the past can greatly influence your ability to respond intelligently to the present and future. A major in History at the University of Mobile enables you to study the past actions of mankind in order to gain a perspective on current events and to profit from human experiences. In addition to a Bachelor of Arts in History, a degree in History with Teacher Certification is offered. A minor in History is also available.


A degree in History prepares you to pursue:

As a History major, you will take courses in Western Civilization, U.S. History, and six courses in History at the 300 level or above.
The Bachelor of Arts in History with Teaching Certification also requires courses in Asia, Africa, and Latin America History, Alabama History, and 36 hours in teacher education.

Familiarize yourself with the important political questions from ancient Greece to the present with a major in Political Science. Courses are designed to promote enlightened and public-spirited citizenship, as well as an understanding of the nature of political life and its relation to human life as a whole. This program includes an emphasis on the American political tradition with courses such as American Government, Political
Theory, Comparative Government, Political Traditions, and Presidency and Congress. You may choose to major or minor in Political Science.

A major in Psychology at the University of Mobile gives you a basic understanding of the principles of behavior and information processing within a Christian context. You’ll study topics such as learning, cognition, perceptual processes, growth and development, personality, and both normal and abnormal behavior. Choose from a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree, as well as a minor in Psychology.


Psychology majors have a wide variety of career options. These include:

A major in Social Science combines the areas of History, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology to give you an overall understanding and study of these disciplines. You may earn a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Science with or without teacher certification.

A degree in Social Science provides a strong liberal arts background that many corporations desire and prepares one to work in management, marketing, sales, mass communication or public relations.
