ORANGE BEACH, Ala. -- St. Gregory's University improved to 7-1 on the season after picking up a 3-1 victory over St. Xavier University Friday afternoon in round one of pool play action at the Gulf Coast Softball Invitational in Orange Beach, Alabama.
Summer Ledbetter smacked a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning providing all the insurance St. Gregory's would need. Laura Mehl, who scored on the home run, collected two hits in the game.
Allie Gibbs went the distance for St. Gregory's scattering five hits and three walks over seven innings. She recorded three strikeouts and allowed just one run.
Jessica Wilson was tagged with the loss after going six strong innings, allowing seven hits and three runs. St. Xavier rallied for one run in the bottom of the seventh inning and brought the tying run to the plate, however, Gibbs quickly closed the door.
St. Xavier drops to 0-1 on the year and will immediately be in action again at 3 p.m. against William Woods University.
St. Gregory's University will wait until 5 p.m. when they will face co-host and currently ranked No. 4 University of Mobile in their second game of the day.
