Houston Baptist University 7
Columbia College 1

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. --Laura Hess did everything right as she struck out 19 batters and allowed just two hits in leading her Houston Baptist University team to a 7-1 win over Columbia College in first round pool play of the Gulf Coast Softball Invitational Friday evening in Orange Beach, Alabama.

Hess, who went the distance made just one mistake in the game when she allowed a solo home run to Columbia’s Sarah Moreau. However, Hess would allow just one more hit the rest of the game and a five run sixth inning helped cushion the already 2-1 lead.

HBU pounded out 11 hits total in the game with Morgan Anderson collecting two.

Columbia drops to 0-2 in the tournament so far and will wrap up pool play tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. against Belhaven College. HBU will play Belhaven tonight at 7 p.m.
