ORANGE BEACH, Ala. -- Lee University (8-0) edged out the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma 1-0 in the final game of pool play in the second day of action of the Gulf Coast Invitational held at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.
A pitcher’s duel to the very end, USAO’s Dana Askins surrendered only three hits and struck out eight while her counterpart, Alyssa Ashley struck out four while giving up four hits. The difference was found in Kelly Golden’s bat as she hit a solo homerun in the second to give the Lady Flames the ever so slight edge.
Ironically the play of the game wasn’t Golden’s homerun, but right fielder Lauren Hilliard’s full layout diving grab to end the game.
Both teams will now await the seeding for bracket play which begins at 5 p.m.
