2004 Gulf Coast Invitational Top Stories

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. - Houston Baptist freshman pitcher, Cheri Wood, got herself into a whole heap of trouble and then got herself out. Finding herself with bases loaded and no outs in the top of the seventh, Wood got the next two batters to fly out and struck out the third to help her Huskies (13-1) defeat the University of Mobile (15-5) 4-2 in the 2004 Gulf Coast Invitational championship game.

Down 1-0 the Huskies exploded for three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Pitcher Cheri Wood (2-for-3), Morgan Anderson (1-for-3), and Kelly Majewski each scored in that inning to allow the Huskies to take a 3-1 lead.

After scoring in the top of the sixth, to cut the Huskies lead to 4-2, the Rams looked poised to complete their second come-from-behind victory of the tournament as they loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with no outs. However, it was not in the cards, as Winter Guthrie popped out to centerfield, Christie Jackson lined out to the shortstop and Irene Elliott struck out swinging, on high heat, thrown by the freshman Wood.

Home run-hitting Katelyn Griffin managed another solid outing going 2-for-3 for the Huskies and will have to be satisfied with only hitting five dingers on the weekend.

Brenda Box (2-for-4), Stephanie Landrum (2-for-4), Meredith Tanner (1-for-4 with a run scored) and Christie Jackson (1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored) all helped to keep the 2nd-ranked Rams in the ball game to the very end.

Cheri Wood gave up two runs and scattered 12 hits while striking out three in picking up the complete game win.

Rams pitcher, Kirby Baxter, surrendered four runs on six hits while striking out two in the close loss.
