
2004 Gulf Coast Invitational Top Stories
| ORANGE BEACH, Ala. - Faulkner University (6-7) batted
around and scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning en route to an
upset victory over second-ranked University of Mobile (13-4) 6-4 Saturday
morning at the Gulf Coast Invitational played in Orange Beach, Ala. Trailing 2-0 going into the fifth, Faulkner exploded with six runs highlighted by Laura Oliver’s three-run homer over the left-centerfield wall. After Mobile responded in the bottom half of the fifth with two runs of their own, the Lady Eagles held off Mobile to pick up their second win of pool play improving their overall record to 2-1. After getting runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, the Rams failed to score and went quietly in the seventh inning in picking up their first loss of the tournament. Mobile falls to 2-1 in pool play and will await the result of University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma (USAO) and William Woods University to see where they will be seeded in the next round of the tournament. Yesterday, Mobile came from behind to defeat William Woods University 4-2 in their first game before knocking off USAO 4-1 in the night cap. Offensively for Mobile, Winter Guthrie collected two hits including a double and drove in three RBI. Mobile will await the final seedings and will play again tonight at either 5 or 7 p.m. -30-
