
2004 Gulf Coast Invitational Top Stories
| ORANGE BEACH, Ala. - Jill Smith tossed a complete game
shut-out as the number five-seeded Saint Gregory’s University (5-2) defeated
the number one-seeded William Woods University 4-0 Sunday morning in the
Silver Championship bracket semifinals of the Gulf Coast Invitational played
in Orange Beach, Ala. Smith went all seven innings, scattering two hits and one walk while striking out six batters and earning the victory. Lacey Owens led off the bottom of the first inning with a double and scored on Christina Cardens fielder’s choice to give the Lady Cavaliers a 1-0 lead. Owens finished the game 2-of-4 from the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Saint Gregory’s would add two more in the second and tack on one more in the bottom of the sixth, giving the Lady Cavaliers all the runs they would need. With the loss, William Woods is eliminated from the tournament. Saint Gregory’s now advances to the Silver Championship bracket finals to face University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma who defeated Lindsey Wilson 7-0 in the other semifinal game at 1 p.m. -30-
