Rams Finish Sweep With 4-2 Win MOBILE, Ala—The University of Mobile baseball team moved to first place in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference standings by finish a 3-game sweep of William Carey with a 4-2 victory Sunday afternoon. Justin Bracewell (2-1) dazzled on the mound for the Rams, going the distance, with 6 strikeouts and only 6 hits and 2 runs allowed. In the first two games of the series, the Rams jumped ahead, but in this game, William Carey scored first, thanks to a leadoff homer from David Trisler in the first, and a sac fly from Trisler in the second. But, it didn’t take long for the Rams to answer, as Mobile pushed across 4 runs in the bottom half of the 2nd inning thanks to a pair of errors from William Carey third baseman Steven Moore. After singles from Jared Baria and Carlos Romero started the inning, the wheels came off for the Crusaders. T.J. Esfeller dropped a perfect sacrifice bunt down the third base line, and when Moore attempted an off-balance throw to first, the ball sailed high and scored Baria and Romero, with Esfeller ending up on third. The Rams used another Moore error and a sac fly to finish the scoring. Matt Carter came out of the pen to pitch 5.1 innings of scoreless ball for the Crusaders, while Bracewell blanked William Carey for the remainder of the ball game. Solomon and Stephen Stork collected 2 hits apiece at the top of the Mobile batting order, and Jared Baria went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 8 games. Louis Rolon went 2-for-3 for the visitors, and Trisler finished 1-for-3 with their lone RBIs. Mobile (6-2, 6-0) next plays at home Wednesday, February 13th at 1:00 against Stillman College. Game 2: Rams Take Game in Extras MOBILE, Ala—The University of Mobile had to wait an extra day to finish game 2 versus William Carey, but it was worth it, as Mobile walked away with the 9-8 victory. The Rams’ David Cramblitt got a second chance to play hero and he succeeded. After coming up empty with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th, Cramblitt delivered the walk-off RBI single in the 11th to plate Carlos Romero and end the game. The game was suspended due to darkness Saturday and picked back up at 1:00 Sunday. Through the first 7 innings of action, the Rams capitalized on 5 William Carey errors to build an 8-3 lead. A Carlos Romero homer in the 6th and a 4-spot in the 7th thanks to a pair of Crusader miscues highlighted the scoring. But, William Carey bounced back and picked up 2 runs in the 8th, and then turned around and used a Mobile mistake to pick up 3 unearned tallies in the top of the 9th to tie it up at 8 apiece. Mobile loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom half of the frame, but Kyle Boswell came in for the Crusaders and shut the door on the Rams’ offense. Daine Solomon, Nelson Curry and Daniel Harper collected two hits apiece, while Carlos Romero scored 3 runs. Zack Mann (1-0) picked up the win with 2 innings of scoreless relief work. Game 1: Rams Hand Crusaders First Loss MOBILE, Ala—The University of Mobile baseball team handed William Carey its first loss of the season by holding on for a 5-3 victory in game one of Saturday’s double header. Game 2 was suspended due to darkness and will pick back up at 1:00 Sunday with the score tied 8-8 in the top of the 10th. Mobile struck first and used a pair of double plays late to hold on for the big conference victory. The Rams scored a run apiece in the first two frames, as Stephen Stork belted a solo homer in the first, and Carlos Romero produced a sac fly in the second. Greg Alexander cut the lead in half for the Crusaders when led off the 4th with a solo shot to left. In the bottom half of the inning the Rams rallied for a 3-spot to take a 5-1 lead. An error, single and walk loaded the bases with only 1 out for the Rams and then Daniel Harper came through with a 1-out 2-run single to push the lead to 4-1. Nelson Curry followed two batters later with a run-scoring single to finish the scoring for the Rams. The Crusaders tried to fight back in the final two innings of the 7-inning affair, but the Rams’ defense was up to the challenge and turned a pair of clutch double plays to hold on. After a walk, double, wild pitch, and error in the first 3 at-bats of the 6th inning produced a pair of William Carey runs, the Rams defense stepped up. Starting pitcher, Jesse Luker nabbed a line out off the bat of Josh Dannelley and doubled off Dustin Smith at first base to erase the runners and make it 2 outs. Then, Luker fanned pinch-hitter Leon Farmer to end the frame. In the top of the 7th, Luker allowed the first 2 runners to reach and the Rams called Ira Turner out of the pen to pick up the save. After striking out Jordan Prout, Turner allowed a single to load the bases. Will Dannelley stepped up to the plate with the bases juiced and an opportunity to be a hero. Instead, it was the Rams’ defense that became the hero. Dannelley ripped a grounder to third, David Cramblitt picked it for Mobile, threw on to second for one out, and Jared Baria turned and threw to first, where Daniel Harper made the stretch to end the inning and the game with the double play. Baria extended his hitting streak to 6 games with a 3-for-3 effort, while Harper finished 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs. David Trisler and Alexander led the Crusaders with 2 hits apiece. Luker (1-0) picked up the win and Turner picked up his first save of the season. Mobile moves to 4-2 overall and 4-0 in GCAC play, while William Carey falls to 6-1 overall and 6-1 in conference.
