Rams Finish Sweep of Blazers JACKSON, Miss—The University of Mobile baseball team polished off an impressive sweep of Gulf Coast Athletic Conference foe Belhaven College by holding on for a 12-9 victory Saturday afternoon at Smith-Wills Stadium. Seven of the first 8 hitters in the Mobile lineup produced multiple hits, as the Rams pounded out 18 hits against the Blazers’ staff to overcome 6 Mobile errors. The offensive production started early for Mobile, as four of the first five hitters hit safely in the top of the first inning to stake the Rams to an early 3-0 lead. After adding a Stephen Stork solo homer in the 4th to take a 4-3 lead, the Rams busted the game wide open with a 5-spot in the 5th. Daine Solomon started the scoring with a 2-run triple, and then with 2 outs, Mobile tacked on 4 straight hits to finish off the inning’s scoring and take a 9-3 lead. Belhaven made a game of it, by capitalizing on the Mobile miscues to push across 6 runs over the final 4 innings of play. The Rams finished their scoring with 1 in the 6th and 2 in the 7th. Stork went 2-for-5 with 2 RBI and 4 runs scored, while David Cramblitt, Kevin Orso and Carlos Romero collected 3 hits apiece. Justin Bracewell (3-1) got the win with 7 innings of work, allowing only 2 earned runs. Mobile (10-2, 9-0) returns home to host Faulkner University for a double header Tuesday, February 19th at 12:00.Game 2: JACKSON, Miss—The University of Mobile baseball team took game 2 at Belhaven, 6-2, to finish off the double-header sweep Friday evening. Kit Powell and Scott Mitchell combined to allow only 8 hits in 9 innings on the mound for Mobile and the Rams jumped on top of the Blazers with 4 runs in the top of the 1st. After a pair of Blazer errors put runners on and plated the first Mobile run, Carlos Romero followed with a 2-run single, and Brett Barber connected for a RBI groundout to cap the 4-run frame. Belhaven attempted a rally with a 2-run homer in the 2nd, but the duo of Powell and Mitchell shut the door the rest of the way, and the Rams plated a pair of insurance runs in the 8th inning to cap the scoring. In the 8th, the Rams used the long ball to provide the cushion. David Cramblitt hit a pinch-hit 2-run homer to left field to give the Rams the 6-2 score. Powell (1-1) threw 7 innings, allowing 7 hits and 2 runs, while Mitchell went the final 2 frames, fanning 2 to pick up the save. Nelson Curry sparked the top of the Mobile order with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate, while Kevin Orso and Romero provided the thunder in the middle, going 3-for-5 and 2-for-5, respectively with 3 combined RBIs. Mobile moves to 9-2 overall and 8-0 in GCAC action. The teams finish the series with a 1:00 game Saturday. After Mobile starter Jesse Luker (2-0) fanned Shawn Anderson to get out of a bases loaded jam in the 1st, the Rams got their own bases-loaded chance 2 innings later. A walk, hit-batsmen and error helped load the bases, and with 2 outs, Orso jumped on the first pitch and launched it over the fence for a quick 4-0 lead. Things stayed the same through 5, until David Cramblitt stepped up to the plate in the top of the 6th and launched a 2-run shot to left field for the 6-0 win. Belhaven scratched one run across in the bottom half of the frame, but that’s all they could muster against Luker. The senior from Thomasville, went the full 7 innings, fanning 6, giving up 7 hits and allowing only 1 run. Cramblitt finished 2-for-3 with the 2 RBI, while Orso finished 1-for-4 with the grand slam, his 4th home run of the season.The two teams finish the series Saturday at 1:00 to complete the series.
