Jacobs Wins #600
MOBILE, Ala—University of Mobile Head Baseball Coach Mike Jacobs recorded his 600th career victory when the Rams swept Gulf Coast Athletic Conference rival Belhaven College over the weekend. The milestone win came in Saturday’s 12-9 victory, as the Rams pounded out 18 hits.
Jacobs, who began the University of Mobile baseball program in 1990, has compiled a career record of 600-367-2. The headman has coached the Rams to four GCAC Championships and has recorded at least 20 victories in each season at the school.
That includes nine 30-win seasons and two 40-win seasons. In the 2001 season, Jacobs guided the Rams to the NAIA College World Series.
Jacobs’ success has also gone beyond the baseball diamond at the University of Mobile. In his 18+ seasons in charge at Mobile, Jacobs has seen 24 players go on to sign professional contracts.
Two of those, J.C. Romero (Phillies) and Saul Rivera (Nationals), are currently on major league rosters. Joe Espada was a 2nd-round draft pick of the Oakland Athletics in 1996, and last season the Pittsburgh Pirates chose Kyle McPherson in the 14th round of the MLB Amateur Draft.
Mobile currently sits at 10-2 overall and 9-0 in the GCAC. Mobile next plays at home Tuesday, February 19th when Faulkner Univ. visits for a 12:00 double header.
