Rams win game one in dramatic fashion
MOBILE, Ala. -- The University of Mobile (12-1) scored three runs in
the bottom of the seventh inning to come from behind and win the first
game of a scheduled seven inning doubleheader, 5-4, Tuesday afternoon
at home in Mobile.
Heading into the bottom half of the seventh inning and trailing 4-2,
the Rams Joel Jernigan led off the inning with a walk. Lead-off man Carnell
Parker then drew a walk to put runners on first and second with still
nobody out. Josh Banashak then placed a perfect bunt down the third base
line and ran out the throw to first base loading the bases with still
nobody out.
Designated hitter Lance Howard then hit a deep sacrifice fly that not
only scored Jernigan but moved the speedy Parker over to third base.
After a pitching change was made, new Eagles pitcher Alex Aucoin was
greeted rudely on his first pitch when second baseman Bryan Mosely hit
another deep shot to center field as Parker was able to tag up and score
on the play knotting the game at 4-4.
With two outs and a runner on first base, Banashak quickly stole second
and third baseman Nate Thomas drove him in with an RBI single to left
field ending the game in dramatic fashion.
Chris Copeland picked up the win for the Rams in relief going one inning
and allowing no base runners. Jake Baker, who started the seventh inning
for Faulkner, was credited with the loss after allowing three earned
runs on one hit and two walks in 1/3 of an inning pitched.
Jon Kalb started the game for the Rams and went four innings allowing
just three runs, two earned, and three hits.
The Eagles struck early when designated hitter Dustin Carter smashed
a three-run homer in the top of the first inning putting Faulkner ahead
3-0.
Faulkner would hold onto that lead until the bottom of the fifth inning
when the Rams would scratch out their first run of the game. However,
the Eagles would answer right back in the top of the sixth with another
run of their own putting them comfortably ahead 4-1.
The Rams would then get one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning
before scoring the final three runs of the game in the bottom of the
seventh inning.
