Rams win 11th straight
MOBILE, Ala. -- The University of Mobile (14-1, 4-0) again had to rally
from behind but picked up their 11th victory in a row defeating Loyola
University-New Orleans 10-9 Friday afternoon at home in Gulf Coast Athletic
Conference play.
Trailing 8-7 with one out in the bottom of the seventh, Bryan Mosley
walked and was followed by a single from Nate Thomas. The next hitter,
Eddie Davila, popped up to Loyola catcher Hudson Miller for the second
out of the inning. However, pinch hitter Justin Rosen’s two out
RBI single up the middle scored Mosley knotting the game at 8-8. Pinch
hitter Ron McMillian then followed with a another two out, two run single
putting the Rams ahead 10-8.
Loyola (7-7, 3-1) answered in the top of the eighth as Greg Veltri scored
on a wild pitch with two outs and the bases loaded to cut the lead to
10-9. However, Mobile reliever Chris Copeland (3-1) struck out Brian
Mason to end the threat. Copeland retired the Wolfpack in order in the
ninth to pick up the win. He threw 3.1 innings, giving up four runs,
three earned, on five hits and struck out three.
The Rams jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the third inning but Loyola
answered with five runs in the top of the fourth.
Leadoff-man Carnell Parker was 2-of-3 from the plate to go along with
two walks. The speedy Parker stole four bases in the game and scored
three runs setting the tone for Mobile. Third baseman Nate Thomas collected
three hits and drove in two RBI’s as he raised his season average
to .429.
Mobile will go for the series sweep tomorrow as play continues with
a scheduled seven inning doubleheader set to begin at noon.
