Rams Take Opener From Crusaders

HATTIESBURG, Miss-- The 6th-ranked University of Mobile baseball team polished off a sweep of Gulf Coast Athletic Conference William Carey Saturday evening, by taking game two of the double header 7-4.

The Rams again won in comeback fashion just like the previous two games. William Carey built a 4-2 lead through 7 innings, but the Rams rallied with a 4-spot in the 8th to make a winner out of Justin Bracewell.

The two teams traded runs through 6 innings to the tune of a 2-2 tie, but the Crusaders surged ahead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the 7th. In that frame, David Trisler and Steven Moore led off with back-to-back singles to start the rally. Jordan Prout followed with a RBI single and Pat Barnes capped the Crusader scoring with a 2-out, run scoring hit.

Mobile made the 8th their inning and took the ball game. Kevin Orso got things started with a leadoff double, and then Carlos Romero and Daniel Harper followed with RBI singles to knot the game at 4-4. A few batters later, Daine Solomon provided the winning tallies with a 2-out, 2-run double to left-center.

Brett Barber added a pinch-hit RBI single in the 9th and then Justin Bracewell stayed in the game for his 3rd complete game of the season. Bracewell (8-1) scattered 10 hits over the 9 innings and struck out 5 while allowing only 2 earned runs.

Carlos Romero went 4-for-5 at the plate with a homer and 4 runs scored, Orso finished 2-for-5 and Harper finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Michael Lewis led the Crusaders with a 2-for-3 effort and Louis Rolon went 3-for-4.

Mobile improves to 30-7 overall and 23-1 in GCAC play. Mobile next plays at Faulkner April 2nd at 2:00 for a double header.

Game 2:
Rams Out-Hit Crusaders

HATTIESBURG, Miss-- The University of Mobile baseball team improved to 22-1 in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play by out-hitting the William Carey Crusaders en route to a 9-8 victory in 7 innings Saturday in game 1 of the double header.

William Carey held a 6-3 lead after the 1st, but the Rams' bats kept on hitting, while the Mobile bullpen trio of Matt Brown, Ira Turner and Scott Mitchell shut the door and limited William Carey to 2 runs in 6.1 innings of work.

Mobile led off the game by taking a 3-0 lead as Jared Baria extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a RBI single and Kevin Orso followed with a RBI double. The Crusaders then, sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom half of the frame to plate 6 runs.

The first 5 batters reached in the frame that saw Lance Brewer, Louis Rolon and Michael Lewis produce RBI. A Ram error accounted for the other tallies.

The Rams fought back, though and tallied 6 runs over the next 3 innings to take the game. Orso produced another RBI double in the 2nd and Daine Solomon smoked a 2-run homer to left-center for an 8-6 lead. The game-winning run came in the 4th when Carlos Romero scampered home on a double-play ball after leading off with a double.

Matt Brown got the win after working 3.2 scoreless innings in relief and Scott Mitchell picked up his 5th save with 1.1 innings of scoreless ball. Sam Gates was tagged with the loss after allowing 2 runs in 1.2 innings out of the pen.

Nelson Curry went 2-for-4 at the plate with 2 runs scored, Baria went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI, Orso finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and Solomon finished 1-for-4 with the 2-run homer to lead Mobile.

Lewis went 3-for-5 with 2 RBI at the top of the Crusaders' batting order, Louis Rolon went 3-for-4, and Brandon Chretien and David Trisler both finished 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored.

Game 1:
Rams Rally On Crusader Miscues

HATTIESBURG, Miss-- The 6th-ranked University of Mobile baseball team improved to 21-1 in GCAC action by rallying to take a 7-5 ball game from William Carey University.

The Rams took advantage of 4 Crusader errors and used a pair of long balls to come back from a 5-1 deficit through 4 innings.

The Crusaders jumped on Jesse Luker for 3 runs in the 1st, as a Mobile error plated a pair and then Louis Rolon followed with a RBI single.

After Kevin Orso belted his 6th homer of the year in the 2nd, the Crusaders tacked on single tallies over the 3rd and 4th on RBI's from Lance Brewer and Ben Smith.

Then, the Crusaders unraveled in the 5th as Mobile plated 4 runs on a pair of Crusader miscues. Jared Baria capped the inning with a 2-out, 2-run single up the middle that extended his hitting streak to 17 games. Center fielder Carlos Romero then led off the top of the 6th with the winning tally on a solo bomb to left-center.

Ira Turner came in for Mobile and worked a scoreless 8th for his 7th straight scoreless appearance and Scott Mitchell fanned the side in the 9th for his 4th save of the season. Jesse Luker (7-1) allowed only 3 earned runs in 7 innings of work will striking out 6.

The two teams finish the series with a 1:00 double header Saturday.
