Rams fall against NCAA Division II West Florida, 2-0
PENSACOLA, Fla. -- No. 16-ranked University of West Florida scored
two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and held on for a 2-0 victory
over the University of Mobile (24-12) Tuesday afternoon in Pensacola,
Florida.
West Florida, an NCAA Division II opponent, began the eighth inning
rally when OwenDavis reached base with one out on a throwing error
by UM third baseman Nate Thomas. After Jacob Whisenhunt flied out to
centerfield for the second out of the inning, Brian Rodgers kept the
inning alive by singling through the left side of the infield. A passed
ball advanced both runners ahead one base and pinch hitter Josh Loosier
singled up the middle with two outs plating two Argonaut runs.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Rams threatened by getting runners
to first and second base with two outs, however, pinch hitter J.C.
Santana lined out to left field to end the game.
Freshman Jesse Luker (3-3) was tagged with the loss going 4.1 innings
in relief and allowing just two runs (one earned) on two hits while
striking out three.
The two teams combined for just a total of nine base hits in the game
and no extra base hits. Short stop Eddie Davila (2-for-4) collected
two of UM’s four hits and Lance Howard (1-for-4) and Bryan Mosley
(1-for-3) each had one.
Starting West Florida pitcher Kyle Ramsey got the win going eight
innings and allowing just four singles while striking out nine. Fred
Fosson got the save after pitching the ninth inning.
Mobile will be in action again on Friday, April 1 when the team plays
at cross-town rival Spring Hill College at 6:30 p.m.
