Loyola, Mobile split double header

WESTWEGO, La. -- In the first game of a double header, Jeff Pippenger threw a complete game as Loyola defeated Mobile 4-2 Saturday afternoon at Segnette Field.

Loyola struck first when Brian Mason led off the second inning with a double to left center. Andy Rodriguez followed with a single that scored Mason to make the score 1-0.

Loyola extended the lead in the next inning. Bryan McCaulley and David Lauricella hit consecutive singles to start the frame. Kevin Kalina’s sacrifice bunt was misplayed by Mobile starter Jesse Luker to load the bases. Marc Jaynes singled scoring McCaulley and Lauricella to give Loyola a 3-0 lead. The Wolfpack added another run in the inning as Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Kalina.

Pippenger threw 6.1 innings of shutout ball before Tim Watson hit a two run home run in the seventh to make the score 4-2. Pippenger retired the next two hitters to earn his third complete game of the year. The senior right hander gave up seven hits, struck out two and walked three to improve his record to (4-4).

Lauricella led Loyola at the plate. He was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Rodriguez was 1-for-1 and drove in two runs.

For Mobile , Luker (3-4) got the loss. He threw three innings and gave up all four Loyola runs on seven hits. He struck out two. Joshua Banashak was 2 for 3 for the Rams.

In the second game, the Rams belted 13 hits in route to an 8-2 victory.

Leland Howard (3-1) got the complete game victory. He threw seven innings and gave up two runs on five hits and struck out five.

The top six hitters in the Ram lineup accounted for 11 hits. Carnell Parker, Lance Howard, Eddie Davila, and Banashak each had two hits. Davila drove in three runs for Mobile (28-15, 15-9).

For Loyola (18-23, 10-11), McCaulley was tagged with the loss. He went five innings and surrendered six runs on nine hits and struck out one hitter. He fell to 5-4 of the year.
