Rams Take 2-of-3 From Badgers

MOBILE, Ala-- The 6th-ranked UM baseball team took the rubber match of the 3-game series at Spring Hill 9-4 Saturday evening.

The Rams jumped on the Badgers' pitchers for a 7-0 lead after 4 innings and then held on as the Badgers scored 4 late runs.

Justin Bracewell (9-1) picked up the win by scattering 9 hits over 8 innings and allowing only 1 earned run. Bracewell faced the minimum through the first 4 frames to allow Mobile to build the 7-0 lead. Taylor Chadick took the loss, surrendering 6 runs in 2.2 innings of work.

Daniel Harper was the key cog in the offensive attack, smacking a 2-run homer as part of a 3-run 2nd inning and then producing a 2-out, 2-run single up the middle in the 3rd for a 6-0 lead. Kevin Orso added RBIs in the 1st and 4th innings to build the lead.

Bracewell's early dominance prevented the Badgers from getting a runner in scoring position until the 6th inning, but the Badgers started to find their groove, with a little help from the Mobile defense. A couple of miscues gave Spring Hill its first run in the 6th and then Tyler Moberg and Brad Holstein drove in a pair of unearned tallies in the 8th.

Nelson Curry, Brett Barber, Kevin Orso, Stephen Stork and Daniel Harper all had 2-hit efforts for Mobile. Harper drove in 4 runs and Stork crossed home 3 times. The Rams (36-10, 26-3) don't play again until GCAC foe Tougaloo visits for a 3-game set beginning Friday.

Game 2: Mobile 9 - SHC 4

After Mobile cruised to a 7-1 series-opening win Friday night, the Spring Hill College baseball team responded by taking the first game of Saturday's double header 5-2.

Nick Clapper went 7 innings and scattered 8 hits while fanning 2 to pick up his 5th win of the season, while Kit Powell was tagged with the loss after giving up 10 hits and 3 earned runs in 6 innings of work.

The game looked good early for Mobile as Carlos Romero jacked a solo homer in the 2nd to put the Rams ahead 1-0, but then the tide changed in the 3rd. The Rams had a golden opportunity to build on their lead with runners at 2nd and 3rd with no outs, but Clapper and the Badgers defense halted the threat.

The Badgers then turned around and tied the game in the bottom half of the frame on a Justin Harrison RBI double and tacked on a pair of 2-out, run-scoring hits from Tom Connors and Pat O'Malley in the 4th for a 3-1 lead. A pair of unearned runs in the 5th put the Badgers ahead 5-1 before Nelson Curry added a solo homer for Mobile in the 7th to cap the scoring.

Brett Barber led Mobile with a 2-for-3 afternoon, while Connors and Justin Harrison collected two hits apiece for the Badgers. The rubber match will start shortly.

Game 1: Mobile 7 - SHC 1

The 6th-ranked University of Mobile baseball team improved its record in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference games to 25-2 by defeating Spring Hill 7-1 Friday evening in the series opener.

The Rams and Badgers were locked in a pitchers' duel heading into the 8th inning before a pair of Badger errors helped Mobile put up a 5-spot in the 8th.

In that game-changing 8th inning, the Rams batted around after a pair of errors by Javier Cherta put Nelson Curry and Brett Barber on to begin the frame. Jared Baria and Kevin Orso went back-to-back with a RBI single and RBI double, respectively and Cliff Downey later capped the scoring with a 2-run single.

Barber began the game's scoring with a RBI double in the 3rd and Orso added a solo homer in the 6th for a 2-0 lead, before Billy Saliski produced a sac fly to send the game into the 8th with Mobile holding the 2-1 lead.

Jesse Luker (8-2) scattered 9 hits over 6 innings of work while limiting Spring Hill to only 1 run. Ira Turner came on with runners at the corners and 0 outs in the 7th, and kept the Badgers from scoring. Matt Hasley was tagged with the loss after allowing 2 earned runs through 7 innings of work.

Downey finished 3-for-4 with 2 RBI, Orso went 2-for-5 with 2 RBI and a homer, Baria finished 2-for-5 and Daine Solomon produced 2 hits. Tom Connors and Blake Nelson led the Badgers with a pair of 3-for-4 evenings.

Mobile (35-9) and Spring Hill (16-27) finish the series with a 1:00 double header Saturday at Spring Hill.
