Pair of UM Baseball Players Honored

MOBILE, Ala. – The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference announced late Tuesday night that University of Mobile's Briggs Bishop was named the Pitcher of the Week, while Brett Barber was named Player of the Week.

Briggs took the ball in the opener of a crucial conference series and set the tone with a complete game shutout, with 0 walks and 6 strikeouts. The few times he ran into trouble, Bishop took matters into his own hands. With runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out in the 5th, Bishop snared a grounder and caught the leadoff man off third base. With 2 outs, a line drive knocked his glove off, but Bishop chased the ball down and flipped to 1st to get out of trouble.  Briggs is a junior from Thomasville, Alabama.

Bishop was also chosen as the Region XIII baseball pitcher of the week.

Barber posted an impressive .615 batting average and got on base at a 69% clip in a big week for the Rams. After dropping a non-conference game versus a tough foe early in the week, Barber's hot bat helped the Rams to a 3-game sweep over conference foe Spring Hill to push Mobile to 12-9 in the GCAC and keep them in contention with series against the leaders still remaining. The junior outfielder accounted for 8 runs in the 3-game GCAC set and reached base 5-of-5 times in the series finale.  Brett is a outfielder from Daphne, Alabama.

The Rams are now 22-24 on the season and will take their 12-9 conference mark to Belhaven for a 3-game series this weekend. Game 1 is slated for 6:00 Friday. The Blazers and LSU-S Pilots are tied for the GCAC lead with 16-5 records.
