Blazers tally 19 hits en route to 14-4 victory over Rams

JACKSON, Miss-- Belhaven College pounded out 19 hits Saturday to pick up a 14-4 victory and sweep the visiting University of Mobile Rams.

The Blazers ended the game due to the 10-run rule in the 7th inning when 7 batters came up to the plate with only 1 out being recorded. Buddy Wyrick ended the ball game with his conference-leading 9th home run, a 2-run shot to left.

Blaise King, Bryan Bennett, Shawn Anderson, and Wyrick all tallied 3 hits to help pace the attack.

The Rams tied the ball game in the top of the 3rd with some 2-out magic, but it was down hill from there. Jared Baria reached on a fielder's choice to make it 2 outs, and then back-to-back singles sent him home, with the RBI coming on a base hit from Carlos Romero to right-center. Daine Solomon just missed making it 4-1, when he sent a fly ball out to the wall in left.

Belhaven answered the Rams score with 5 runs of their own over the next 2 innings, including 3 2-out tallies in the 3rd. The Blzers pounded out 4 2-out hits in the 3rd, with a Shawn Anderson RBI single and a Buddy Wyrick 2-run double doing the damage. The Blazers tacked on 2 more in the 4th thanks to a pair of RBI singles.

Mobile rallied in the top of the 6th, pushing across 3 runs on the strength of 3 singles and a triple. Solomon followed a RBI-triple from Romero with a run-scoring hit, and 2 outs later, Kyle McPherson produced a RBI single, after Solomon moved to 3rd on an errant pickoff attempt.

The home team answered the rally with 8 runs over the final 2 innings on the strenght of 8 hits. Mobile falls to 22-27 with a 12-12 conference mark. They host Loyola for a 3-game set this weekend, starting with 1 game Friday.

Rams Fall in Game 2

JACKSON, Miss-- The University of Mobile Rams dropped Game 2 of the double header, as the home-standing Belhaven Blazers rode more brilliant pitching to a 5-0 victory at Smith-Wills Stadium.

Larkin Braxton dazzled the Rams with 9 innings of shut out ball, as he held them to 2 hits and 3 walks, while striking out 7. The Rams got only 1 runner in scoring position in the night cap, when Daine Solomon laced a 2-out double down the line in the 7th.

Meanwhile, the 1st-place Blazers put the game away with a 4-run 5th. The Blazer lineup pounded out 5-straight singles to start the frame and a pair of errant pickoff throws helped the cause. Joe Scalzo singled home Reg Ott with the 2nd single of the inning and then 2 batters later with runners at the corners, Ross Black's pickoff throw to first sailed high and allowed both runs to score.

The Blazers took an early lead, when they sent 7 batters to the plate in the bottom of the 2nd and scored a run thanks to a Ricky Owens solo shot over the left-center field fence.

Mobile falls to 22-26 on the season with a 12-11 conference mark. The Blazers move to 35-11 overall, with a 18-5 GCAC record. The finale will be tomorrow at 1:00 at Smith-Wills Stadium.

Mobile drops pitcher's duel in Game 1

JACKSON, Miss—The University of Mobile baseball team dropped a hard fought 2-0 ball game at GCAC-leading Belhaven, thanks to some dominant pitching from Thomas Royals and a couple of manufactured runs by the Blazers.

After Briggs Bishop stranded 2 Blazer runners in the opening inning, the home team was able to manufacture a run in the 2nd for an early 1-0 lead. Shawn Anderson led off with a double to left and then moved around the bases on a couple of productive outs, the RBI coming on a ground out to short by Reg Ott.

The Blazers' Royals cruised on the mound and got himself a late insurance run with his work at the plate. The senior right hander out-dueled Bishop by going 7 shutout innings with 5 strikeouts and limiting the Rams' bats to 4 singles, while allowing only 1 Ram into scoring position.

Batting 3rd in the Blazers' batting order, he led off the bottom of the 6th with a double and after moving to 3rd on a errant pickoff attempt, scored on a hot-shot single past short from Bryan Bennett.

Royals also got some help from his catcher Buddy Wyrick who threw out 2 Rams trying to steal 2nd. Bishop was the tough-luck loser in the game, going 7 innings, allowing 2 runs and 6 hits, with 0 walks. He struck out 2 batters in the game, both to end an inning with a runner in scoring position.

Mobile drops to 12-10 in conference action, while the Blazers move to 17-5, picking up another game on the 2nd place Rams. Game 2 will start shortly.
