Game Four: Rams Drop Wild Game

MOBILE, Ala— The LSU-Shreveport Pilots bounced top-seeded University of Mobile from the 2008 GCAC Baseball Tournament by taking a wild and wacky 18-11 ball game that lasted all of 3 hours and 46 minutes.

The game featured 29 combined runs, 30 combined hits, 8 errors and 5 balks. Fans that stuck it out witnessed over 350 pitches thrown by 7 pitchers. While the game featured a pair of potent offenses and lackluster defensive efforts, Justin Ennis breathed some life into the Pilots, by tossing 5.1 innings of relief, while allowing only 1 earned run, with 3 strikeouts to pick up the victory.

The LSU-Pilots built a 6-3 lead after 3 innings of action as Quentin Shamsabady produced RBI singles in the 2nd and 3rd innings, and the Pilots capitalized on a Mobile miscue to plate 3 unearned in the 3rd.

But, the Rams stormed back with a 6-run 4th inning to take a temporary lead. In that inning, the Rams got run-scoring hits from Matthew Sparks, Kevin Orso and Carlos Romero, and were aided by a pair of Pilot errors.

But, the Pilots stormed back to knot the game with 3 unearned runs in the bottom half of the frame as Shamsabady produced yet another RBI hit and Andrew Blubaugh had a 2-run double.

After the Rams took another short-lived lead thanks to some more Pilot errors in the top of the 5th, the Pilots put the game on ice by batting around in the bottom of the 6th and plating 8 runs off of the Mobile bullpen.

A pair of wild pitches plated the first two runs in the frame for the Pilots, LSU-S had productive outs with a pair of sac flys, and Josh Todd hit a 2-run double, followed by a RBI single from Shamsabady.

Shamsabady finished 5-for-5 with 4 RBI and 4 runs at the top of the Pilots' order, Andrew Blubuagh went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, Andrew Brouillette finished 3-for-5, Craig Barnes and Bryan Stebbings both had 2-hit evenings, and Todd finished 1-for-5 with 4 runs scored batting in the 9-hole.

Mobile falls to 42-14 on the season and will next play at the Region XIII Tournament in Cleveland, TN beginning May 6th. The Pilots (44-14) advance to face Belhaven in the GCAC Championship Game Saturday at 1:00 at Spring Hill. Because LSU-S is undefeated in the tournament, they will have two chances to win, if need-be.

Day Three: Rams Stay Alive

The 8th-ranked University of Mobile baseball team capitalized on mistakes to erase William Carey University from the 2008 GCAC Tournament with a 12-1 victory.

Mobile pounded out 15 hits and took advantage of 5 William Carey errors to cruise to the victory and advance to play LSU-Shreveport Friday night at 7:00.

Kit Powell picked up the win for Mobile, going 7 innings, limiting the Crusaders to 4 hits and 1 run, and striking out 5 batters. Matt Carter took the loss for William Carey after surrendering 7 runs over 3.2 innings of work.

The two teams traded runs in the first inning before the Rams took control of the ball game with 3 runs apiece over the 3rd and 4th innings. Mobile loaded the bases in the 3rd and Daniel Harper followed a Daine Solomon RBI-ground out with a 2-run single to take a 4-1 lead.

In the 4th, Mobile took command of the game when 2-out errors by Brandon Chretien and Louis Rolon pushed home three Mobile runs for a 7-1 Rams’ advantage. Stephen Stork added a solo homer and RBI single late as Mobile continued scoring en route to the 12-1 finale.

The Rams featured a balanced lineup in the attack, with six hitters producing multi-hit afternoons. Nelson Curry went 2-for-6, Stork finished 3-for-6 with the homer, Jared Baria went 2-for-7 to move into a tie at the top of the career hits leader board at Mobile, Kevin Orso went 2-for-2 and reached base all 6 times, and Carlos Romero and David Cramblitt rounded out the multi-hit performers for the Rams.

Greg Alexander led the Crusaders at the plate with a 2-for-3 ball game, while Pat Barnes finished 1-for-3.

Day Two: Rams Fall To Blazers

The 3rd-seeded Belhaven College Blazers staved off elimination for another day by using a 7-run 7thinning to rally and knock top-seeded University of Mobile to an elimination game Friday at noon.

Belhaven had runners aplenty in the early going, but Mobile’s Jesse Luker kept working out of trouble, stranding 9 Blazer runners through 6 innings of work to help the Rams to a 5-2 lead.

But, Belhaven more than made up for the earlier miscues by touching up reliever Ira Turner for seven runs in the 7th. The Blazers sent 13 batters to the plate in the game-changing inning and Reg Ott, Brian McCormick, Shawn Anderson and Charlie Edwards produced run-scoring singles, while Austin Fagan plated a pair with a single.

The Rams had built a 3-0 lead after one inning of action, when Carlos Romero and Daine Solomon produced 2-out RBIs, and then the teams traded deuces in the 5th to set the stage for the 7th-inning fireworks.

Brian Legnon was the winner for the Blazers, going 7 innings, allowing 3 earned runs and scattering 12 hits. Anderson finished 2-for-4, Edwards picked up two hits, Ott went 2-for-5 with 3 RBI, Brian McCormick went 3-for-4 and Chris Hartfield finished 2-for-4 for the Blazers.

For the Rams, Daine Solomon finished 3-for-4 with 3 RBI, Carlos Romero went 3-for-5 with 2 RBI, Kevin Orso went 3-for-5 and Nelson Curry finished the game 2-for-5 at the plate for the Rams.

A bright spot for 8th-ranked Mobile came in the 1st inning when Luker struck out Bryan Bennett and Charlie Edwards to move into first-place on the all-time strikeouts list at the University of Mobile. The senior lefty is also the career leader in wins and innings pitched.

The Rams fall to an elimination game at noon Friday against the loser of the LSU-Shreveport/William Carey ball game, while the Blazers move on to face Spring Hill College at 3:30 Friday.

Day One: Rams Roll To 20-6 Victory

Mobile used four 2-out tallies over the first 3 frames to take a 6-1 lead, before the Wolfpack made a game of it with a 4-spot in the 3rd inning when Josh Borges and Stephen Carroll both came through with 2-run singles to make it a 6-5 ball game.

Up 10-6 heading into the 6th inning, the Rams got a 2-run single from Orso and a 2-run double from Solomon to pull away.
