Rams score five runs in bottom of the eighth to
rally for 14-11 win
SHREVEPORT, La. -- The University of Mobile baseball
team (39-23) won for the second day in a row in come-from-behind fashion
this time using a five run eighth inning to overcome an 11-9 disadvantage
to win 14-11 over Berry College in the second round of the double elimination
NAIA Region XIII Tournament Wednesday afternoon in Shreveport, Louisiana.
With
the win, the Rams improve to 2-0 in the tournament and move on to play
Lee University tomorrow, Thursday, May 12 at 7 p.m
Trailing 11-9
entering the bottom of the eighth inning, the Rams scored two runs
to tie the game and then loaded the bases with two outs. UM
catcher Daniel Harper drew a two-out, bases loaded walk to force
in the eventual game-winning run and Carnell Parker added some insurance
runs with a two-RBI single to put the Rams ahead 14-11.
Relief pitcher
Richard Kelly got the win pitching the final 2.1 innings of the game
to pick up his first victory of the season improving to
1-0.
Early on, the Rams jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first
inning thanks in part to a homerun from first baseman Lance Howard.
Berry College
would score four runs in the top of the third to take 4-2 lead but
Mobile would come back with seven unanswered runs to regain
the lead at 9-4. Berry would get one of those runs back in the sixth
inning and exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh inning
giving them an 11-9 lead.
Today’s win marked only the second all season
that Mobile had won a game when trailing after seven innings.
