University of Mobile Baseball Player Selected in MLB Amateur Draft
MOBILE, Ala— University of Mobile baseball player Kyle McPherson was drafted today in the 14th round of the 2007 MLB Amateur Draft.
The Pittsburgh Pirates made McPherson the 4th pick of the round and the 428th pick overall. McPherson served as a duel-threat for the Rams last season, picking up 86 at bats at 3rd base and making 14 appearances on the mound.
The Creola, Alabama native posted better numbers on offense for Mobile, but the Pirates selected the 19-year old right-hander for his pitching ability. At the plate, McPherson posted a .302 average and drove in 16 runs, and on the mound he struck out 26 batters in 46 innings, while going 1-7 in 9 starts.
According to Rams’ Head Coach Mike Jacobs, the Pirates are getting a pitcher with a lot of tools and a lot of baseball ahead of him.
“He has the body you look for, good arm strength and throws 90+ with a good breaking ball and change up,” Jacobs said. “Plus he’s only 19, so they’re getting a guy with 3 years of college experience who’s still fresh.”
McPherson attended high school at St. Paul’s Episcopal School and transferred to Mobile from Faulkner State Community College. He’s expected to start out with the State College Spikes, the Pirates Single-A Affiliate in University Park, PA.
