Mobile Golf Teams Win UM Spring Fling



Final Recap

MOBILE, Ala-- The final round of the UM Spring Fling is in the books, and the University of Mobile men and women both made comebacks to take home top honors.

Mobile's men trailed Faulkner State Community College by 6 strokes after shooting a 303 on day one. But, the Rams rallied on the final day to fire a collective 289, the best score of any team on either day, to edge Spring Hill College by 3 strokes. Mobile finished with a 2-round total of 592, while the Badgers shot a 595 over the two day event at Azalea City Golf Course.

The Lady Rams made a bigger comeback, as they trailed Northwood University (TX) by 13 strokes after the first round of play on Monday. Mobile bettered their round 1 score of 332 by 24 strokes, to shoot a 308, which was the best of any women's team, and finish with a total of 640. That put them 15 strokes ahead of Northwood for the tournament.

For the men, Jacy Todd and Tommy Bell fired a 71 and 70, respectively on Day 2, while Chris Kennedy(76), Braxton Gillespie (75), and Glenn Williams(73) also shot solid rounds. Bell's round 2 score of 70 was the best of anyone at the tournament.

The Lady Rams rebound was made with great improvement from a couple of the golfers. Maegan Rice rebounded from an opening-round 85, to fire a 73 Tuesday, while Samantha Goettsch shaved 9 strokes off her score to shoot a 76. Kelly Rainbolt maintained her stellar play by following an opening-round 80 with a 78. Rice and Rainbolt finished tied for 3rd, while Goettsch tied for 6th.

Alberto Bellester and John Darby tied for top honors among the men's play by shooting 1-under par for the tournament with 143's. Bethany Pesek and Amanda Purcell placed 1 and 2 in the women's play. Pesek, from Northwood, shot an 8-over 152, while William Woods' Purcell shot a 155.

Mobile's men next play at the BMW Intercollegiate in Greenville, SC April 8th, while the women will participate at the Embry Riddle Bash at the Beach March 30th.

Day 1 Story

MOBILE, Ala -- Round 1 of the UM Spring Fling is in the books and both host squads are trailing, but still in the hunt.

The Lady Rams find themselves tied with William Woods University for 2nd place with both schools firing a collective 332. That places them 13 strokes behind leader Northwood University (TX), who was led by Bethany Pesek and Ivy Koehler. Pesek finished day 1 as the individual leader, firing a 73, while Koehler finished 3rd with a 79 in round 1.

Mobile was led by Kelly Rainbolt, who shot a round-one score of 80, which tied her for 4th individually, and Meghan Dove who shot an 82. Maegan Rice and Samantha Goettsch both finished with 85's.

Faulkner State Community College finds itself in first place on the men's side of the action with a collective 297. The University of Mobile is in 4th place, 6 strokes out of first. Spring Hill is in 3rd with a 3 stroke lead on the Rams.

Faulkner State was led by 2 golfers in the top 6 individually, John Darby and Parker Rush. Darby finished 2nd with a 72, while Rush shot a 74 to tie a large group for 6th overall.

Mobile's Chris Kennedy was among the group tied for 6th. Braxton Gillespie and Clay Wilson also helped pace the Rams as they both finished with 75's.

The final round of the event will take place Tuesday with a shot gun start at 8:30.
