Mobile to Tip-off Conference Season

MOBILE, Ala. -- After winning two of three games at the Mesa State University Shoot-out in Grand Junction, Colo., over the Christmas break, the University of Mobile men’s basketball team will return home to begin conference play against defending GCAC champions Southern University of New Orleans (SUNO) on Thursday, Jan. 8 at Pharr Gymnasium.

Mobile (10-4) is led by junior sensation Tramaine Perry who is averaging just over 15 points per contest.  Right behind Perry in the scoring column is the surprising offensive play of center Gimel Lewis.  Lewis, known primarily for his defensive play, is second on the team in scoring at 10.9 points per game while leading the team with 7.1 rebounds a contest.  Lewis, the Rams all-time blocked shots leader, has also recorded 30 blocks this season.

So far, the Rams have averaged 83.4 points a game and are holding their opponents to just under 72 points through 14 games.  Two of the Rams four losses came at the hands of Division I competition, including last month’s loss against SunBelt power Louisiana-Lafayette.

The University of Mobile women’s basketball team (6-5) will also be in action that night against SUNO in the first game of the doubleheader set to begin at 5:30 p.m.

The double-header will feature an Oldies Rock -N- Roll musical theme with hits from the 50’s and 60’s being played throughout the evening.  Oldies 106.5 WAVH morning personalities Ron Anthony and Kris Pierce of the Wake-up Club will be on hand to MC a halftime promotional contest presented by Big Time Diner at the men’s game and dancers from the Carol Lloyd Dance Studio will be performing at halftime of each game.  Also, tomorrow night’s “Fan of the Game” will receive a large pizza from Dominos Pizza and will also receive a set of ticket to the Mobile Baybears opening night.
