Rams Win Battle With Rivals
MOBILE, Ala—The University of Mobile men's basketball team improved to 8-1 in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play, but fighting back against rival Spring Hill and then running away with the game at the end.
The first half of action was closely contested throughout, as the largest lead was only 5, which Spring Hill reached twice. In the frame, the Badgers took a 30-29 lead into the break thanks to hot shooting as a team (10-of-18) and 13 points from Marcus Coleman on 5-of-6 shooting.
The Rams only shot 34% in the half, but used their defense to make up the difference. Mobile grabbed 8 steals and forced 12 turnovers from the visitors to end up taking 14 more shots than the Badgers.
Mobile took its first lead of the 2nd period with 16:44 left to play when a Robert Jones basket staked the Rams to a 40-38 lead. The two teams battled back-and-forth from there to a 52-51 Mobile lead. That's when things changed, as the Rams went on a 13-4 run to take a 65-55 lead with 3:09 remaining on a pair of Steve Pellan free throws.
From there, the Rams hit their free throws and picked up the 75-60 win in front of the raucous home crowd.
Donte Walker led the Rams with 16 points, while Walter Fitzgerald, Robert Jones and Steve Pellan all chipped in 12 points. Derrell Moreaux added 10 points and 6 assists. Mobile moves to 12-6, 8-1 and next plays at LSU-Shreveport Saturday at 4:00 pm.
