Last-Second Shot Sinks Rams At Home
MOBILE, Ala-- Loyola's Torry Beaulieu nailed a 3-pointer with just two ticks left on the clock to take down the University of Mobile men's basketball team 80-79 in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action at Pharr Gym Saturday.
Mobile (12-10, 4-7) had five players in double figures, led by Paul Holmes' 24-point, 9-rebound effort. Lelund LeDay and Donte Walker added 12 points apiece, while Treii Pace and Carlos Hughes each chipped in 10. Sean Bennett led Loyola with 19 points, while Beaulieu finished with 15.
The late-game magic started with 2:56 on the clock and the score tied at 69-69. From there, there were eight lead changes. Down 74-73 with 31 seconds to go, LeDay nailed a 3-pointer to give Mobile a 76-74 edge, but Loyola's Sean Bennett answered right back with a three ball just 10 seconds later to retake the lead. After Pace gave Mobile a 79-77 lead on an old-fashioned three-point play, Beaulieu sank his three-pointer.
The game's opening half saw the Wolfpack jump on top early, but the Rams used a 7-0 run to capture a 17-16 lead with 11:56 left, after Loyola held an early 16-10 advantage. But, the Wolfpack answered right back with a 9-0 run, and they would not trail the rest of the half.
Mobile shot 63% in the second half and hit 5-of-8 from beyond the three-point line, finishing the game with a field goal percentage of 41%. Loyola shot 57% in the final period and finished 50% for the game.
Mobile next plays Monday, Feb. 9at SUNO in a 7:30 pm contest. |
