UM Captures GCAC
Tournament Championship
WESTWEGO, La. - The
University of Mobile Rams (26-9) continued to make their mark in the
basketball record books as they captured their first ever Gulf Coast
Athletic Conference tournament championship by defeating Southern
University-New Orleans 59-56.
The Rams led wire-to-wire in the tournament final, never holding more than
a ten point lead. The key in the game was Mobile's defense which held SUNO
to 36.7 percent shooting, a far cry from their first encounter in which
the Knight's shot 71.1 percent.
Mobile took a 34-26 point into the half and then held on for dear life as
SUNO's Roberto Ferriar went on a three-point flurry, hitting 5-of-9 in the
second half. Ferriar's final three-pointer, with just over a minute
remaining, cut the Rams' lead to 58-56.
After a Gabe Feagin free throw the Knights had one last chance with 12.3
second left.
A failed attempt to free up Ferriar with a set screen left Ernest Porter
to take the inbounds and shoot what would be the game-tying three-pointer.
It barely hit the front of the rim.
Mobile was led by Gabe Feagin's 21 points with Tournament MVP Gimel Lewis
getting 15. Feagin and Tramaine Perry (seven points and eight rebounds)
both earned All-Tournament honors.
Ferriar finished with 27 points and Lamar Clark had 10 for the SUNO
Knights who drop to 20-8 overall.
Both teams will receive automatic bids to the NAIA National Tournament
held in Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. from the 24-30.
