of Mobile
MOBILE, Ala. -- Derrell Moreaux, Jr., of Washington-Marion Magnet
High School in Lake Charles, La., signed to play basketball next season
for the University of Mobile head coach Joe Niland announced on Thursday.
Moreaux, a 6-0 point guard, helped lead his high school team to a 34-4
record this past season and a trip to the state quarterfinals. The previous
season as a junior, Moreaux led his high school team to the state championship
game.
Under the direction of high school head coach Mack Guillory, Moreaux
averaged 11 points and eight assists per game as his team won back-to-back
district championships.
An excellent performer on the court, Moreaux has also excelled in the
classroom. Moreaux maintained a 3.75 GPA as a junior and was named to
the National Honor Society in 2002, the National Society of High School
Scholars in 2004 and Who’s Who Among American High School Students
in 2004.
“Derrell shows real leadership qualities which is especially important
in playing the point guard position,” UM head coach Joe Niland
said of his newest point guar. “Because he is also such a good
student, he has the ability to lead both on and off the court.”
Moreaeux won the Boy’s Basketball Leadership Award in 2004 and
served as a delegate to the GPA State Convention in 2005.
The University of Mobile basketball team finished the 2004-05 season
with a 30-6 record overall and their second consecutive trip the NAIA
