Rams Take Down Ragin Cajuns

LAFAYETTE, La-- The University of Mobile men's basketball team took down NCAA I University of Louisiana Lafayette 68-64 in an exhibition contest Tuesday evening. The game counts as a regular season contest for the Ragin Cajuns.

Donte Walker tallied 17 points to lead Mobile, while Robert Golston added 14 points. Walker hit 7-of-11 from the floor, while Golston shot 7-of-10.

Chris Gradnigo led the Ragin Cajuns with 17 points, while Randell Daigle finished with 12.

Mobile out shot ULL 41% to 34% and held the Ragin Cajuns to 3-of-16 shooting from three-point range. The Rams overcame a large discrepancy in free throw opportunities, with ULL going 33-of-42 from the charity stripe, compared to a 16-of-19 effort from the Rams.

The Rams showed they belonged in the first 3:36 of play as a pair of Treii Pace three-pointers gave Mobile an 8-2 lead after the Ragin Cajuns had scored the game's opening basket. With UM up 13-7, ULL battled back to take a 15-13 lead on a Daigle jumper with 10:32 left. The teams battled back and forth from there, with the Rams reclaiming the lead on a Brock Dockery jumper at the 7:58 mark. The Rams maintained the lead the rest of the half, taking a 34-31 advantage into intermission.

The Ragin Cajuns only managed to grab three small leads in the final 20 minutes, with the Rams having an answer each time. ULL scored the first five points on the second half to go ahead 36-34 with 17:29 left, but at the 16:02 mark, Walker sank a jumper to tie it for Mobile and Ben Healey put the Rams ahead just seconds later. ULL went ahead 39-38 at the 15:39 mark, but Golston answered with a pair of points in the paint just six seconds later for the 40-39 lead.

It stayed a one possession game down the stretch, with ULL again going ahead 55-53 with 6:06 remaining, but a Kevin Calloway bucket tied it for Mobile and Golston put the Rams ahead with 5:01 left. The Ragin Cajuns tied it at 59-59, but the Rams broke the tie on a Walker jumper with 2:10 to go and held the lead the rest of the way.

Mobile (4-1) will travel to NCAA I University of New Orleans Wednesday, Nov. 25 for a 7 pm exhibition contest. The Ragin Cajuns fall to 1-2 on the season. They are members of the Sun Belt Conference.
