Freshman Phenom Brent Grube Saves Game
for UM, Rams win 2-0
Rome,
Ga. - The University of Mobile men's soccer team rebounded from
their home-opening loss by defeating No. 11 Berry College 2-0 in
the first game of the Berry College Invitational, held in
Rome,
Georgia. Tending to the loss of their starting goalkeeper Tommi
Sarkkinen, the Rams packed in their backline to help give added
security to freshman keeper Brent Grube. However, the brash
freshman quickly showed that he was capable of stepping into the
starting role.
"Brent was
awesome," Coach Fuller said, commenting on his freshman phenom."He was the
man of the match."
On his
8-saves performance, the freshman from Hudsonville, Michigan commented,
"Going into it I was a little nervous and anxious. I think we played well
today and I had my backs there helping me out. Once I got my hands on the
ball I felt more confident. I think I have a few small things to work on,
but I'll get that done. Overall, I feel good about my performance."
While the
Rams were out-shot, 21-6, the No. 2-ranked defending national champions
made the most of their opportunities, as they quickly scored within the
first minute of play.
Flicking on
a ball played in by Steven Linpow on a free kick, Thiago Ramos set up a
goal for Brady Bryant who found himself in perfect position, just six
yards away from the goal. Bryant's goal in the 26th second gave the Rams a
1-0 lead.
The Rams
struck one last time in the 79th minute as freshman, Mark Robinson, nailed
a direct kick with pin-point accuracy to the upper-ninety. The shot, which
hit the post and ricocheted in, was the defender's first goal of his
collegiate career.
The Rams,
4-1, will close out the tournament with a game against regional foe,
Thomas University, Sunday at 1 p.m.
