Rams to face two top 15 opponents this coming weekend
MOBILE, Ala. -- The University of Mobile men’s soccer team (0-0-2)
travels to Columbia, Missouri this weekend to face no. 7 Lindenwood University
and no. 12 Columbia College in the Columbia College Soccer Tournament
Sept. 16-17.
The Rams open up on Friday night with Lindenwood University, who dropped
from no. 1 to no. 7 this week in the NAIA Top 25 poll after an 0-1-1
performance last week. Lindenwood tied with Martin Methodist College
1-1 and suffered a 3-0 setback to now, no. 1-ranked Lindsey Wilson College.
Lindenwood, the defending NAIA champion and pre-season no.
1 team in the nation, is now 1-1-1 on the season.
Columbia College is ranked second in Region V just behind Lindenwood
and ranked no. 12 overall in the country.
The Cougars played one match last week, upsetting Baker University,
previously ranked No. 10, on the road by a score of 1-0. Marcos Fernandes,
who scored the game winning goal for the Cougars last Wednesday, was
named the American Midwest Conference (AMC) Player of the Week for his
efforts.
The Rams are coming off back-to-back double overtime ties this past
weekend in the 2005 O’Charley’s Futbol Festival that kicked
off their 2005 campaign. In the opener, the Rams fell behind to Oklahoma
Baptist early in the match before getting the equalizer from freshman,
newcomer, Andrew Humphris to tie the game at 1-1. In the tournament finale,
Mobile was forced to play a man down for most of the match after a red
card early in the game, but goalkeeper Tommy Sarkkinen stepped up big
by making eight saves.
For his shutout effort, Sarkkinen was named Gulf Coast Athletic
Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week.
The Rams tackle no. 7 Lindenwood on Friday, Sept. 16 at 5 p.m. and then
face Columbia on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
