#2 Mobile defeats cross-town rival Spring Hill College 2-1

Mobile, AL – A goal by Spring Hill’s Kele Park in the 56th minute ignited the Rams’ urgency fuse as they scored two goals to pull out a 2-1 win over their cross-town rival. A grind to the very end, the legitimate top-25 Badgers gave the 2nd-ranked University of Mobile men’s soccer team all they wanted and more.

While UM keeper Andrew Bayliss showed brilliant form recording five saves on the evening, the Badgers did a great job of keeping the senior keeper on his toes with 9 shots taken.

“There was nothing he could have done on the goal,” Rams assistant goalkeeping coach Remi Roy commented. “In the first half Bayliss made three great saves that kept us in the game at zero-zero. That gave us extra energy.”

The Rams, who are now 8-0-1 on the season, reacted to Park’s goal with one of their own in the 68th minute. Senior Chris Williams gave a great ball to Carron Williams who turned on his jets and used his blistering pace to tie the score at one a piece.

In the 78th minute Joel Bartlett, driving the ball towards the end line, served the ball which Jason Miniaci first took a strike on. While the Spring Hill defenders managed to keep the ball from penetrating the line, it was Mobile defender Jamie Ferguson who headed the ball to the back of the old onion bag to give the Rams a 2-1 win over a much improved and talented Spring Hill College team.

“Spring Hill has improved so much,” assistant coach Brian Person commented following the game. “If they continue to improve at this rate they will be in the top-25 by season’s end if they get a result against William Carey or another big team.”

Commenting further, the pleased assistant coach added, “One good thing that we can take away from this is that we’re not going to give up and we can break teams down when we need to.”

The Rams will get the week to rest and prepare for the 2nd Annual Futbol Festival soccer tournament which opens up on Friday September 27 with 6th-ranked AUM taking on St. Gregory’s University at 5:00 pm. Mobile will play at 7:30 pm against a tough Oklahoma Christian University team.
