UM Sweeps William Carey In Soccer
Doubleheader
MOBILE, Ala. – The 25th-ranked UM Rams
(5-3-1) defeated 6th-ranked and previously undefeated William Carey
College (8-1-1) 4-2, in the
nightcap of a doubleheader that saw the UM women defeat the Crusaders
as well, 1-0.
The much-needed win, which ends a two-game losing skid, came against
a Crusaders team that is ranked atop the NAIA Region 13 that features
four other teams ranked in the national top-25 poll.
Despite falling behind 1-0 early on, the Rams finally got things going
in the 32nd minute as Travis Bailey headed in a free kick by Jason
Providence.
The rest of the first half became the Junior Pomponette show as the
Arima, Trinidad native set up goals scored by Juhani Koivuranta in
the 40th minute and Jason Providence in the 45th.
While the Crusaders struck again in the 75th minute with a goal by
Barry Farrell, the Rams had an immediate answer as Jason Miniaci connected
on a pass by London, England native Alex Sesto.
In the earlier game, Sunniva Haaland made good on a penalty kick in
the 57th minute for the game-winner.
The UM women’s soccer team improves to
3-0-1 and will square off against tough regional foe Belhaven College
in game one of a University
of Mobile Homecoming doubleheader set to kickoff at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday,
Oct. 2. The men will play in the nightcap against Bellevue University
at 5:30 p.m.
