Rams Defeat William Carey 4-1

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The University of Mobile improved to 2-0 in GCAC play with a convincing 4-1 victory over William Carey College, Tuesday afternoon in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Senior Mike Fricke scored the game-winning goal in the 78th minute on a missed shot by teammate Johani Koivuranth to put the Rams ahead 2-0.  After Koivuranth banged a shot off the left post, Fricke followed up the miss by leaping in the air and directing the loose ball into the back of the net.

“I am happy we won, it was a great way to start the trip,” said UM head coach Peter Fuller.  “We won on the road by three goals against a top 25 team.  That was a big win for us.”

In the first half, Mobile took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when freshman Darren Toby dribbled through the Crusader defense and served a perfectly placed ball into the center of the 18-yard box where Mobile native Rueben Risco ran on and headed the ball into the left side of goal.

After the Crusaders cut the lead to 2-1 in the 81st minute, the Rams scored their third goal of the day putting the game out of reach.  This time, Toby put pressure on William Carey goalkeeper Garrett Heibert forcing Heibert to loose control of the ball.  With the ball loose in front of the goal, Toby needed only to retain possession and punch the ball in for a 3-1 lead.

In the 89th minute, the Rams put the nail in the coffin when Risco recorded his second goal of the game.  After sophomore Jordan Wilson headed a shot off the left post, Risco redirected the miss into the open net.

Starting goalkeeper Tommy Sarkkinen returned to the lineup for the first time since his injury on Sept. 11.  After a three game absence, Sarkkinen didn’t miss a beat making seven saves and allowing just one goal.

Mobile (6-2, 2-0 GCAC) will now travel to Columbia, Kentucky to face No. 3  Lindsey-Wilson, Thursday night at 7 p.m.
