Mobile, AL – The much anticipated
match-up against 7th-ranked conference rival William
Carey College didn’t disappoint the Rams’ faithful as the 2nd-ranked
University of Mobile men’s soccer team came away with a 2-1 win.
Playing their first game in fifteen days, the Rams extended
their undefeated record to 9-0-1.
Playing “the best” team they’ve played thus far
this season, a pleased coach Peter Fuller made no secret as to the
magnitude of the win. “This win is huge; it’s just massive.”
A game in which the Crusaders edged out the Rams
with shots-on-goal, 11-to-9, it was another vintage performance by senior
keeper Andrew Bayliss that kept Mobile in the game with 10 saves.
“Andy saved us again tonight,” Rams goalkeeping
coach Remi Roy commented following the victory. “I’m very happy; he’s been
training very well and working hard.”
The Rams struck first in the 26th
minute on a Penalty Kick by senior James Gledhill. Awarded a PK after
Carron Williams was taken down in the box on a break away, Gledhill
drilled a shot to the top shelf to put the Rams up 1-0.
William Carey, who swept last year’s season series
2-0, refused to back down. In the 41st minute Carey’s Kirk
Williams took a strike from outside the left side of the eighteen yard
box. Rifling a shot to the upper ninety, William Carey forced the Rams to
enter the half tied 1-1.
Switching up the formation a bit, the Rams came
out of the half and scored the game winning goal early in the second half.
Awarded a free kick 35 yards off the left end line, senior Fawzi Bellal
decided to test Carey’s keeper in the 50th minute. Unable to
hold onto the save, sophomore defender and team leading scorer Jamie
Ferguson knocked in the rebound for the 2-1 win.
The Rams, starting a three week home stretch with
tonight’s win, will play Nyack College Saturday, October 4, at 7:00 p.m.
