MOBILE, Ala. – The University of Mobile
men’s soccer team (10-0-1) handily defeated Nyack College
Oct. 5, 6-0. Outshooting the Nyack College Purple Pride 20-6,
the Rams got on the score board early in the second half and
never looked back.
The win is just what Mobile’s head coach
Peter Fuller was looking for as his 2nd-ranked Rams will play
host to 1st-ranked Lindsey Wilson College Wednesday. Oct. 9, at
7:30 p.m. “We couldn’t ask to be a in a better position heading into
Wednesday’s game against Lindsey,” a pleased Peter Fuller commented after
the win.
While clearly in control the entire time, it
was not until the 57th minute that the Rams would send a ball
to the back of the old onion bag. Playing the ball to the end line,
Mobile’s Carron Williams crossed the ball which was accidentally
misdirected by Nyack’s Jeff Pearson for an own goal in the 57th
minute.
The flood gates seemingly opened up as
seconds later the Rams’ Mike Fricke scored an unassisted goal to put
Mobile up 2-0.
Moments later Mobile’s Carron Williams
struck again, denting the net to put Mobile up 3-0 in the 58th
minute.
Rams coach Peter Fuller, wanting a “four-goal result to take care of our Longo,” got his wish when Chris Williams
scored Mobile’s fourth goal in the 62nd minute.
Longo, a rating system that assigns points
based upon location, strength of the team and point spread, plays a
significant role in determining post-season play location and who in fact
gets to play.
Defender Steven Linpow scoring on a penalty
kick in the 67th minute and defender Jamie Ferguson scoring on
a header in the 73rd minute, accounted for Mobile’s final two
goals. Ferguson continues to be the Rams leading scorer as he has 6 goals
on the season.
