UM Men Fall In Finals
HATTIESBURG, Miss—The University of Mobile men’s soccer team saw its 14-game come to an end thanks to a 2-1 loss to William Carey University in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championship game.
The 4th ranked Rams struck early when Ruben Diaz fed Jack St. Hilaire for the game’s first goal only 6 minutes into the action.
Things stayed that way for the next 75 minutes as both defenses dominated, with only 4 shots on goal being given up between the two teams. But, in soccer you play 90 minutes, and William Carey broke through.
The Crusaders scored a goal in the 81st minute and 82nd minute to pull out the 2-1 victory and take the 2007 GCAC Championship.
Mobile falls to 14-3-1 on the season and will next host a Region XIII Tournament game Saturday, November 3rd at 7:00 pm. The opponent is yet to be determined.
Semifinals V. Spring Hill:
Hattiesburg, MS- #4 University of Mobile Rams advanced to the 2007 GCAC men’s soccer tournament finals with a 2-1 victory over Spring Hill College.
Mobile used a dominating offensive effort for the game as the Rams blasted out 28 shots in the contest; however, the play of Badger goalie Dan Criscione was outstanding. Criscione saved 13 shots in contest.
Despite Criscione efforts the Rams were able to put two goals on the board. The first came in the 7th minute of play as Jack St. Hilaire found Geert Slits for the first goal of the afternoon.
But for much of the half the Badger defense would bend but not break and in the 29th minute Spring Hill evened things with an outstanding goal by Stanley Byrd off a Noah Tomko cross.
In the second half the Rams proved too much for the Badgers and in the 57th minute Onesimus Ikungo scored the game winner for the #4 Rams.
With the win Mobile advances in the GCAC Championship game and will take on the winner of Belhaven/William Carey at 8:00 pm at the WCU Soccer Complex.
