MOBILE OPENS UP REGION XIII MEN’S SOCCER TOURNEY WITH 4-1 WIN

MOBILE, Ala. – The 9th-ranked UM men’s soccer team (13-4) opened up the first round of the 2003 Region 13 tournament with a 4-1 win over Southern Wesleyan University (8-12). The win sends the Rams to the semi-finals to be played at home on Wednesday, Nov. 12.

The Rams, who out-shot their opponent 16-9, first got on the board in the 10th minute. A ball played into the 18 yard box was headed on by All-American defender Jamie Ferguson and put away by Darren Toby.

Scott Yadon scored in the 14th minute, giving Mobile a 2-0 advantage, as the Warriors were unable to clear a corner kick played in by Ruben Risco.

The tandem of Ferguson and Toby struck again in the 23rd minute as the defender from New Castle, England played in a quick free kick which the Trinidad national team member drove to goal to give UM a 3-0 lead at the half.

Southern Wesleyan’s Andrey Molina scored their only goal of the night as his direct kick in the 70th minute ricocheted off of Mobile’s defense.

Mobile scored their final goal of the night in the 83rd minute. Making his return after missing the last month due to injury, Johani Koivuranta weaved through the Warrior’s defense and scored unassisted.
