UM Men’s Soccer Advances To
Region XIII Final With 3-0 Over Thomas
MOBILE, Ala. – Led by 2002 1st team
All-American Jamie Ferguson’s two goals, the University of Mobile men’s
soccer team (14-4) avenged an earlier season loss to Thomas University
(12-7-3) with a 3-0 win over the Nighthawks in Region 13 semi-final
tournament action. With the win the Rams will now advance to the region
13 tournament championship game against Auburn University-Montgomery on
Saturday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m.
The turning point of the game came in the 26th
minute as Darren Toby, with a clear breakaway to the goal, was fouled by
the Nighthawk’s goalkeeper. The play, which subsequently resulted in
Thomas’ keeper picking up a red card, also set up a penalty kick for Jamie
Ferguson which the junior from New Castle, England put away.
The Rams went up 2-0 with Ferguson’s second goal of
the night in the 60th minute. A corner kick played in by Ruben
Risco was headed in by the 6-foot-2 defender.
The 9th-ranked Rams scored their final
goal in unique fashion as an exceptionally long punt by Mobile keeper
Tommi Sarkkinen was headed in by Jason Miniaci as the Nighthawk’s keeper
was caught off his line.
The Rams will now play 10th-ranked AUM for
an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament and an opportunity to
defend their national title.
