Rams Advance In NAIA National Championship With 3-0 Victory

MOBILE, Ala—On a cold evening at “The Jungle” the University of Mobile men’s soccer team took down 13th-seeded University of Texas-Brownsville 3-0 on the strength of three second-half goals.

The game began slowly with the two squads combining for only 10 shots in the opening period and no shuts on target, but the pace picked up in the second half, at least for Mobile.

Twelve minutes into the final half, the Rams executed perfectly on a corner kick from the far side of the field, as Geert Slits headed home the corner off the foot of David Maddren. Then, in the 70th minute, Cedric Carrie danced away from a pair of defenders on the edges of the 18-yard box and then blasted a ball into the back of the net for the 2-0 lead.

The Rams kept working, and with only 3 plus minutes remaining Geert Slits found Ruben Diaz waiting just inside the box, and then Diaz drilled a shot off the back of a Scorpion defender into the corner of the goal for the final 3-0 result.

Mobile out shot the visitors 13 to 7 and Rams goalkeeper Jason Williams collected 1 save for his fourth consecutive postseason play.

Mobile (12-6-2) continues their quest in the 2008 NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship versus Dana (Neb.) at 2 pm Monday, Dec. 1 in Fresno, California for the Round of 16.

This is the 12th trip to the NAIA National Tournament for the UM men's soccer program. UT-Brownsville ends their season with a 15-5 record, and the loss snapped a 10-game win streak.
