BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The 5th-seeded
University of Mobile men’s soccer team defeated 12th-seeded
Bethel College (Ind) 1-0 in the 108th minute of
double-overtime. Playing on the second day of first-round action
at the Lovers Lane Soccer Complex in Bowling Green, KY, the Rams
never looked settled as they took on the frigid temperatures as
well as a tough Bethel College Pilots team. While the Rams
stared elimination in the eyes, it was the heroics of senior
goalkeeper, Andrew Bayliss, that saved Mobile.
“Let’s be fair, if not for Andy Bayliss we’re
going home,” Coach Fuller said. “He was a different class today and he was
the man of the match. He basically did what he’s been doing all year long
and that’s saving our bacon. He was awesome.”
Bayliss recorded five saves throughout the two
regulation periods and two overtime periods with each successive save more
spectacular than the last. While Bayliss was certainly tested, Mobile kept
Bethel senior keeper Hiram Moreno busy as he had seven saves on the day.
Moreno however came up just a tad short when in
the 108th minute, Mobile senior forward James Gledhill got a
header to go on a ball served by Stephen Shirley to give the Rams a 1-0
victory.
With the loss, the Pilots of Bethel end their
season with a 17-4-4 record. The win moves Mobile to 15-4-1 on the year,
and advances them to the quarterfinal round of the 2002 NAIA Men’s Soccer
National Championship where they will meet fourth-seeded Mid-Continent
College (Ky.) (18-4-1) at noon Saturday in Bowling Green, Ky.
