Rams Win 7-0 In NAIA National Tourney

FRESNO,Calif—The University of Mobile men’s soccer dominated Dana College to the tune of a 7-0 victory, behind an Onesimus Ikungo hat trick Monday afternoon at the 2008 NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championships.

The Rams (13-6-2) advance to the final eight and next play Wednesday at 4 pm (CST) against the winner of Tuesday’s Bethel/Southern Nazarene game. It is the 6th straight victory for Mobile, including the 5th straight shutout win in 2008 postseason action.

Mobile out shot Dana 23 to 9, including a 13-1 edge in the opening half. Ruben Diaz opened the scoring in the 18th minute with an unassisted goal, and then Morgan Copes added a pair of tallies over the next 14 minutes to give the Rams a commanding 3-0 lead heading into intermission.

Diaz assisted Copes in the 26th minute, and then the Boerne, TX native took a David Maddren feed and found the back of the net in the 32nd minute to cap the first half scoring.

Then, in the final half, Ikungo put the game away with a trio of goals, including a score just 34 seconds into the half. Thomas Wharf added the other Mobile goal with a score in the 53rd minute.

Jason Williams got the start in goal for Mobile and worked 61 shutout minutes with a pair of saves, while Kyle Buxton picked up 2 saves of his own over the final 28 minutes.

Diaz finished with 1 goal and 2 assists to increase his team leading total in both categories to 12 goals and 12 assists. Ikungo, meanwhile has 6 goals on the season, with all of them coming in postseason play.
